The Ram - Aries
Symbolic to many societies, the Ram has been used as a symbol of
strength, force, perseverance, and new beginnings. In many cultures a ram
has been used as a traditional sacrifice in rituals to appease the Gods
and bring favor to the people.
The awe and fascination of the power of the Ram no doubt began as people
witnessed the butting of heads in duels of strength, especially during the
mating season.
The Ram is the astrological sign of Aries, the first month in
the astrological year. It's cycle of power is in late Fall and early
Winter--when the males are vying for the right to mate with the females.
The Bighorn Sheep, found throughout the West, tend to live above the
timberline, hiding in the more rocky areas in the mountains. They feed on
grasses and the flowers of some herbs throughout most of the year,
building up layers of fat to help them through the winter months. They
have extremely sharp eyesight, long range vision, an acute sense of smell
and sharp hearing. They gallop at high speed and can balance on the
narrowest of ledges.
While sheep collectively are thought of as placid and unthinking, the Ram
is thought of as virile and relentless in sexual pursuits. In earlier
times, the Moon was often thought of as the Shepherd and the
constellations as his flock--the Ram has always been associated with the
sky gods with it's horns connected to the lunar Gods. The horns are the
most distinctive part of the male sheep. Symbolically, if the Ram is your
sign or totem, it signifies creativity and mental activity. As the years
pass, the horns grow larger, just as the person gains wisdom and
imagination.
We have copied the nature of the horns as weapons, with the use of
"battering rams" used to gain entrance during war times. The horns are a
symbol of defense and status. Throughout the life of a ram, the horns
spiral forming a full curl. This is a sign of great creativity and energy.
Years of practice play as young rams--testing strength and new
positions--is the basis of the creativity and wisdom gained as the years
go by. The rings on the horns mark the age of the ram.
Autumn is a time of strength for new challenges for the Aries, just as in
nature it is a time when the rams compete for the females and territory.
The Bighorn Sheep have hooves that help them absorb the shock of great
leaps and toes that can pinch together to help grip. Their joints also
help absorb shock and they can gain a foothold with only two inches of
space. This is an important part of the Ram totem--symbolizing the need
for just a small opening or opportunity for a new challenge or beginning
for those with this totem. They have an uncanny ability to take a risk but
land safely on their feet. The "black sheep in the family" comes from the
one unwilling to follow the flock but rather, follow his own path.
If a Ram has entered your life, it could be a sign that there is a new
opportunity for you. Use your powers of imagination and creativity along
with perseverance and act upon new ideas. Seek out new heights with the
confidence of knowing you can keep your balance.
